Description of Jakarta
Jakarta has imported a gallery-worthy array of Balinese statues and carvings to compliment their Indonesian cuisine. The art-work combines with warmly lit surroundings, providing a perfect backdrop for the authentic and extensive menu. Starters run to over twenty dishes, including a mouth-watering hot and sour Thai soup, several king prawn dishes, and sumptuous deep-fried crab claws. They also specialise in martabak - a silky combination of exotic seasonings with meat or seafood, neatly tucked in soft rice wrappers. Seafood is a particular area of expertise, although the large selection could see you still deciding your meal at closing time. Decadent options include whole crab or lobster, cooked in black bean sauce, or served fresh with sweet chilli and ginger. Two kinds of Nasi Gorang are also available. This Indonesian speciality consists of rice, shredded chicken, egg, and vegetables, fried with sweet soya sauce, and topped with king prawns and chicken sate. Dessert provides a showcase of sticky Indonesian classics, from banana fritters to coconut pudding.

Jakarta is also a place to impress larger groups with Balinese décor and enticing Indonesian specialities. The Chef's special Platter can be catered to feed any number of people with spring rolls, prawn toasts, "golden bags" of seafood, fresh Thai fish cakes, tangy sate chicken, and juicy crab claws. For a minimum spend, parties of up to fifty people can take exclusive hire of the whole restaurant. This is a great way to get full advantage of the al la carte menu, which offers three separately designed options. The Rijstafel and Rijstafel Special allow guests to sample seven or eight of the most popular dishes on the menu. For a wholly Indonesian experience, there is also a set meal option, which includes starter, four course main, dessert, coffee, and bottle of house wine. All the elements have been specially selected by the chef to comprise a perfect blend of Indonesian cooking. Alternatively, a bespoke menu can be arranged to cater to a party's exact requirements.

Jakarta: Great decor, looks better than the pics! Excellent and attentive service. Food was good but not as great as I was expecting. But then again it could have been what we ordered. Food pluses: Gado Gado salad, Pad Thai, Thai Green Curry. Food Minuses: Battered Prawns (too much batter), Squid in Indonesia soy sauce (too sweet and too fishy!) I think if you order carefully, it would be a good place to eat.

Ate at Jakarta on a Tuesday evening in what was actually quite a busy restaurant. The food is the star of the show and I would particularly recommend the set meal for two which is very good value for money and plentiful. Each of the main courses was flavoured differently and the chilli prawns had just the right kick to them. A lovely restaurant all in all.

Jakarta is a great local with a varied menu. We had squid with chili, beef rendang,roast duck and chicken in coconut sauce with a Nasi Goreng special and spring rolls thrown in, all very tasty. The house wine is under a tenner and very drinkable. Very nice food, and quite a bit of it for what you pay, the place was full of large families who also agreed. A good value local if you fancy the works but don't want to pay London prices.There is something for everyone here, pity its in Colindale!
