Description of Shanghai
What a change from your usual local Chinese! Shanghai occupies the listed premises of a former East End pie and mash shop built when Victoria was on the throne, and the atmospheric old shopfront is still here, perfectly preserved. There are marble prep areas, long bar, original floor, oak booths to seat twenty, tiled walls and eel-motifed mirrors. However, the rear of the restaurant is a newly-built modern Chinese eaterie with oriental imagery filled with warm light from the stained glass ceiling windows. The menu is a combination of classic Chinese favourites complemented by Western -influenced versions of Eastern dishes. The absolute must-haves are the pork-filled fried dumpling starter, served with red vinegar and ginger strips, and main course of baked fresh lobster with ginger and spring onions. There are karaoke evenings to liven the place up even more. This is a place for everyone.

Additional information for Shanghai
The two VIP rooms contrast with each other well - one is classic Victorian with original tiling (but Chinese decor) while the second is modern, with downlighting, disco lights, and tasteful Chinese art on the walls. Either is the perfect setting for Shanghai's famous karaoke nights that attract corporate bonders, mad partiers, and pre-wedding celebraters. A minimum of 15 people is required for the Karaoke menu, to secure a karaoke booking a £5 per person deposit is required in advance.

Delicious food, and great value. The BBQ roast duck was excellent - crispy skin and tender tasty meat, and the scallops with crab meat sauce was superb. For reasonably priced traditional Cantonese food there are few better places than Shanghai.

shanghai is of beautiful appearance from the front, only a shame about the modernised seating which takes up most of the back.
still, great food and great service.

Went to Shanghai with two friends on saturday morning. Had Dim Sum, Moon in King Prawns Tummy, Jelly Fish and Vegetarian Hot & Sour soup. thousand flower tea for 2 and two sprites... Food was delicious and by the end of our meal we were so full we could barely move to get out of our seats! ... total £49.90 for three of us. Good value I think!

Shanghai was busy when we ate their, and this impacted on the service, which was uncharacteristically poor. That said, the food was as delicious as ever, and the price was as reasonable as ever. Shanghai does classic Cantonese food very well indeed, and is very good value too.

We went to Shanghai for Dim Sum (aka Yum Char) and ordered our standard dishes for comparison purposes. The success story of Yum Char was the enormous and tasty Siu Mai, small steamed dumplings with pork inside a Wonton pastry topped with a crab roe, so large they were bulging out of our spoons. We had an enjoyable Yum Char to which I will give my strong recommendation. The bill was just under £24 for 8 dishes and chinese tea for two including tip. Bargain!

Noodle dishes and house specialities much better than dim sum which were a little over cooked and mushy.

I dine at Shanghai restaurant on Kingsland High Street (Dalston) quite often and generally LOVE the food there. I believe it to be one of the more authentic chinese restaurants and good value for money! Today I had jelly fish (a little overcooked but a fave of mine), stuffed bean curd from their specials menu which was average and tea. A small meal for my friend and I but we were arguing over something so lost our appitite. More indepth review next time!

Shanghai is my favourite regular restaurant. Today we had the duck which was a little fatty but their monkfish with lotus root was AMAZING (i.e. 5* award worthy, creative, gourmet) it is even better with cod! We also had braised noodles with veg - good.

Shanghai's food and dim sum is wonderful - both tasty and creative. The wafer wrapped prawns are a must. The service is a little surly - but you can put up with this when the food is so tasty and cheap!

Food Adequate but service a bit slow. Beautiful old decor from old pie and mash shop days (now a listed building).

We didn't actually make it to Shanghai for our party booking, but have been many times and it's a great favourite - especially the dim sum happy hour which is a steal!
