Description of The Barnsbury
How right can they get it? 'Just right' is the answer. Take one old pub, strip back its decor to its very nice essentials, revealing wood panelling, a curving wood bar, scrubbed floors and open fireplaces. Add some smart modern touches like funky chandeliers and a changing array of up-to-the-minute artwork. Put someone in the kitchen who knows their way around a cooker, say someone ex-Conran, and let them devise a menu of honest, flavoursome dishes that aim neither too low or too high. Get real ales pumping round the place with some guest ales just to keep the regulars on their toes. Chalk up an affordable wine list. Then locate the whole package in Islington and - voila! - The Barnsbury. The atmosphere is smart and relaxed, and so are the clientele. Try starter of slow-roasted plum tomato tart with cumin jam, main course if fillet of salmon with pesto crust and lemon and dill butter sauce, and pud of panna cotta with caramelised oranges. The prices are right, too.

Additional information for The Barnsbury
Your group of friends probably already gathers at The Barnsbury, so why not choose it for your birthday bash or Christmas blowout or even smart casual launch or business event? No private room, but if there were, you'd miss the crackling fires and the general air of relaxed enjoyment that seems to prevail. You could, of course, hire the whole venue, seating up to 70 or serving up to 120 standing. Set menus include things like starter of French onion soup, main course of pan fried duck breast with warm beetroot salad and apple and pear tart. Moderately priced wine list and real ales are a definite bonus, and the service is blistering.

The Barnsbury Reviews

I booked the Barnsbury for 6 people on a Sat night at 7.30pm. We were the first to arrive and so the place seemed empty but it soon filled up and the atmosphere was perfect - rustic but definitely more restaurant than pub. The service was excellent (the waitress advised us to order before a large party got their order in) so we wouldn't be delayed for a party after. Everyone loved their food, I can personally recommend the pork! A bit of a walk from the tube but apart from that a fab place!

The Barnsbury was a nice place, good decor, good ambiance. Chairs wooden, no padding, if you like comfort take a cushion.
Food very good with range of choices and house red very good at a good price of £13. However, very poor on the chips front! Pale, cold oven chips no flavour.

Chef turns out some of the best meat & fish dishes in Islington, bar keeps its beer exceptionally well, there's a good wine list & puds are tasty. But the Barnsbury doesn't come cheap and with a 12.5% service charge, waiting staff should remember that, just because the tap water doesn't go through the till, it doesn't mean they don't need to serve the order. A minor let down considering the quality of the lamb, duck, fish, liver etc...

Had a nice Thursday lunch at The Barnsbury. The food was very good standard for a gastropub, very well presented too. The starters arrived promptly, but the mains took a little while to arrive even though we were the last people in the pub. The staff were super friendly though. The puddings were definitely worth staying for, especially the mascarpone pannacotta with poached fig.

The Barnsbury is an upmarket gastropub with a posh clientele. The atmostphere is warm and welcoming and the food of a good standard. Slightly pricey though but good for that special occassion!

We visited the Barnsbury on a dreary London day. It was lovely and cosy inside, with some whimsical light fittings over the bar! The place was booked out but the service was fantastic. We ordered the partrigdge and wood pigeon terrine to begin - we all agreed it was the best we have tasted. We had roast lamb, beef and chicken for main - in each the meat was tender and tasty. The roast potatoes were crisp, the gravy well seasoned and the yorkshire pudding was huge. An enjoyable experience.

The Barnsbury is a great place for a family Sunday lunch. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is jovial, and the food is excellent. We booked for the 12.30 sitting, expecting to have to clear the table by 14.30 but we were not rushed and had a lovely leisurely lunch. Highly recommended.

The Barnsbury was very busy but luckily we booked. Had to wait a little while for them to move a few people who were on our table. Food was tasty as always.

I'd been to The Barnsury about 5 years ago and really enjoyed the food. We went on a Saturday night and it was mostly full of diners and we had drinks service at the table even though we were in the main bar area. They also had our booking at 7.30, although I had it for 8pm and they didn't mind that we were as such late. The food was great, the foie grois was melt-in-the-mouth-tastic, steak just as I like it and the chocolate brownie was lovely. We all enjoyed our meals and would happily go back

We booked a table in The Barnsbury having planned to go for a couple of years. Although the venue and staff are welcoming the food wasn't exceptional although it was better than some of the pub-grub I've had in the area. On reflection I have to give it 7/10. I'm glad I've tried it, but I won't be rushing back.

Friendly informal service and food as good as many a restaurant I've eaten in recently.
