Description of The Old Masters
For a traditional, high-end London dining experience, The Old Masters is up there with the best. The Rubens at The Palace, the luxurious hotel it's part of, was built in 1912 as a hostel for debutantes coming out at Buckingham Palace down the road. The restaurant itself is set out like a traditional carvery grill with ornate high ceilings, chandeliers, the works. Fresh roasts are on the menu every day. Amongst the most famed dishes is the excellent Aberdeen Angus beef roast. Salads, fish and vegetarian dishes are also on the menu. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the breakfasts, we hear, are rather splendid. Live piano music most evenings. Good, welcoming service.

The Old Masters Reviews

The food was less than impressive...the turkey and beef had been sitting out under a heat lamp as well as the sides. The service was the same.

I have dined at the Old Masters before but this time the carvery left a lot to be desired. The vegetables were hard, could hardly get my knife in the cauliflower. The beef was really rare and as were late there wasn't a lot of choice of meat left. The dessert table was quite bare but they did accommodate my 9 year old grandson and supplied some ice cream for him

Boxing day lunch, great service from the moment you enter the hotel. The waiting staff were helpful and attentive. Unfortunately there was at most only two other tables occupied so the atmosphere lacked any festive spirit.
Th starters were very good but the main course was marred by I think the lack of diners causing the vegetables to be left under the heaters for too long ending up with tough dry veg.
But all in it was a pleasant lunch

2nd night of a weekend dining here and the carvery wasn't any improved by having an earlier slot. The beef was so rare the blood was still oozing, thank goodness there was turkey. The vegetables were hard again. The dessert table was better this time. However I opted for the apple torte and this tasted strongly of salt! The staff were very good when I pointed this out and promptly saw the chef. It appeared that the junior chefs had used salt instead of sugar in the pastry!

Enjoyed our lunch at the Old Masters at the Rubens very much. Outstanding and attentive service. Very good food. Perhaps a bit pricey at £25.50 but it was worth it.

Two of us dined at The Old Masters carvery as a pre theatre treat. Service was excellent as was the food. Lovely quiet atmosphere after a hectic tube journey. Beware the drink menu is very expensive which I suppose is normal in hotel bars.

The Old Masters managed to totally fulfil my work colleagues Xmas dinner outing and it takes some doing to achieve an over all thumbs up! From the concierge to the waiters the service was impeccable. I certainly would recommend it and shall go again in the future. Thank you to all the staff.

Even at £30 for 3 courses we left feeling this kitsch hotel that is stiuck in the 1980's like we did not get value for money. Shame as the service was charming and good fun, however even the best efforts of the staff could not make up for the complete lack of atmosphere.

The food was good - nothing particularly special though. We thought that the of £20.50 for the carvery was a little over-priced, however that may be indicative of the area. All in all though it was a nice meal.

The Old Masters Restaurant in the Rubens Hotel is a classy and inexpensive to dine before the theatres in Victoria, which are a few minutes' walk away. The carvery is excellent and saves waiting for service. I shall visit again.

I don't often fancy a carvery for lunch but The Old Masters turned out to be exactly what it says on the tin. There was a small and somewhat odd buffet selection for starters with bits of fish, boiled eggs and various salads. Mains were a splended rib of beef or turkey plus trimmimgs with excellent vegetables. The dessert buffet was superb. Service was very good - conspiratorial to help us get round the Christmas parties in the room and in the right circumstances I would go again.

We had eaten at the Old Masters previously and enjoyed a delicious carvery and while the meal this time was still good - wide choice of starters and meats on the carvery the vegetables and gravy this time let it down slightly. Not terrible, but just not as good as the previous visit which made it slightly disappointing. Would still return to eat here again however as generally a lovely restaurant with attentive staff and pleasant atmosphere
