Description of The Real Greek Souvlaki & Bar - Putney
When The Real Greek opened in Hoxton a few years ago, there was a stampede of diners thrilled by the regional Greek cuisine, the groovy ambience, the open kitchen, the authentic smells, the cool waitstaff. Now, like Troy, London's neighbourhoods are being conquered from within by new branches of the smart, sleek, trendy Real Greek Souvlaki, and lucky Putney is the latest to fall under its spell. Set right in the centre of town, the restaurant is so near the cinema it would be criminal not to make it a stopover before or after the show. The Real Greek is a very hip place, very Manhattan, in which to enjoy Greek dishes quite unlike the normal fare. The souvlaki concept encourages sharing and the narrow tables make it easy. Try hand-rolled stuffed vine leaves, crispy cheese balls with herbs or lightly-battered salt cod. Move forward from there to the souvlaki, or "the best kebab in the world" as they put it. Lamb, pork or chicken are skewered and grilled to perfection, then served with tzatziki and homemade tomato sauce and wrapped in Greek flat bread. Traditional deserts, including a glorious baklava, are a must. The Greek wines are a nice surprise.

Additional information for The Real Greek Souvlaki & Bar - Putney
The concept of The Real Greek restaurants was made for larger parties. Food sharing and passing around is de rigueur, and the Putney branch's long, narrow tables are practically perfect for a birthday, get-together, leaving party or any event you can dream up. Order up a few mezedes (small dishes) of Greek olives or nuts to get you started, then move right into the souvlaki, which offers a variety of meats, fish and seasonal vegetables hot from the grill. An exclusively Greek wine list certainly makes a change from the usual, and the charming staff are always on hand to advise.

The Real Greek was not very real greek...but the food is not bad, if not overpriced. Service was excellent!

I always love the Real Greek. The food has such a fantastic flavour.I'd recommend lamb kofta off the hot mezedes menu as a starter-it was tender, juicy and had an incredible chargrilled taste. Also tzatzi with flatbread. The dishes are small, but deceptively filling.Souvlaki for two is a bargain-stick with greek and have them with fresh greek salad which comes with big slab of crumbly feta. The chips weren't that good this time-dry/needed salt but none on table.Waiters native greek&highly efficient.

The food at The Real Greek Souvlaki & Bar in Putney was fantastic although the service was slow (ie. to receive dessert menu once requested - and bill etc) - and a smile from the staff would be well received. Surprising they don't have Ouzo listed on the drinks menu considering it is a Greek restaurant/bar. We would definitely return for the food though.

I wasn't that fond of the food when I was in Greece, but decided to give the Real Greek a go as I'd seen lots of them around. I was pleasantly surprised - the food was well made, perfectly cooked and delicious. You must try the saganaki! The portions could have been slightly larger, (a small dollop of greek yoghurt for dessert was £4) and as with every restaurant I go to lately, the service is great in the beginning, then very lacking once they get busy. Will still happily return

The Real Greek is a great wee place for a casual meal with friends. The food is delicious (my fave is the salted cod) and pretty reasonable.

Figured we'd book our table early to avoid crowds, so we booked at The Real Greek for 6pm, which turned out to be a good idea cause it seemed to fill quite quickly. Service was quick, attentive and friendly with a smile. Food was OK, nothing i'd particularly hurry back for. Serving sizes were quite small. Watch out too cause the cost of those mezze plates can quickly add up. They automatically add a 12.5% service charge to your bill, which i don't agree with, but quite common these days i guess.

We has a nice night at The Real Greek in Putney. The meater sharer was good although the chicken was very greasey and there wasn't much meat on the wings. Good sangria.
