Description of The Red Fort and Akbar
The Red Fort, the first Indian restaurant in the UK that told the red wallpaper where to flock off, has been a favourite in Soho for nearly twenty years. Now newly refurbished, The Red Fort is relaunching itself with sparkling, elegant new decor that incorporates the materials used in Delhi's Red Fort, the court and residence of the builder of the Taj Mahal. And if that weren't authentic enough, the chef, Mohammed Rais, is the direct inheritor of 300 years of Mughal court cooking. Expect dishes like dum ka lobster, infused with cumin and cooked in a sealed pot, or delicate avadhi gosht biryani, invented by Rais's family. The wines are chosen with particular care to emphasise the interplay of flavours.

although I have seen this restaurant for years I never stopped in and this was my mistake. The food was great and service was perfect. I will be back.

The mixed starters were enough for four people. The mugal korma was deliciously creamy and the dall was spicy enough.

My party all loved the Red Fort and Akbar Restaurant. The food was absolutely the best Indian food I have every eaten.

Food was great with a trendy bar downstairs, be warned they do like a chopped up red chilli.

The Red Fort doesn't disappoint. Excellent quality food, and right in the heart of busy Soho. Make sure you book at the weekend. Good range of choices for vegetarians.

This was my first time at Red Fort and I have to say I was very happy with the food. I've been to other "posh Indian" restaurants like Mint Leaf, which I love, but the food generally bears little resemblance to "normal" Indian food. This was incredibly good, but imaginative (hare, sea bass, etc.) food, which was very tasty. A bit on the expensive side, but worth it. The cocktails at Akbar downstairs are very good, and good value at £7, but the music was far too loud and actually hurt our ears.

The Red Fort is one of my absolute favourite Indian restaurants in London - well prepared, fresh ingredients and outstanding service. Delicious food without being too heavy - can't wait to go back soon!

The red fort is fun, vibrant and serves deliciious food. The only moan is it takes too long to get a cocktail from downstairs

Had business lunch at the Red Fort. From previous visits I was aware of the excellent fixed lunch menu. The waiters did not however offer up this menu until asked. The food was as excellent as ever and at £12 plus 12.5% service per head great value for the quality. I won't list the dishes as the menu is shown on the RedFort/Akbar website but the overall impression is that it is quality tandoori-style, healthy, not greasy and goes down much better on a lunchtime than a standard curry would.

was very quiet so difficult to gauge service. Food was excellent and wine very good but expensive

Fantastic mix of classic and new Indian dishes. Second visit to Red Fort has another highly enjoyable experience. Highly recommended.

First class food - especially the monkfish starter, delicious. This is an expensive place, reflected in the lovely room and fab food. The service was quick, efficient but a bit grumpy on a busy Friday night. Wine was very expensive generally, even more so than usual. Worth it if you haven't had a posh curry before, although Emni on Upper St N1 is almost as good and 25-30% cheaper
