Description of Village East
Village East restaurant in London's historic, madly active Bermondsey calls to mind the East Village establishments we infest in Manhattan. It sprawls through a listed warehouse and glass-fronted apartment building and is decorated in polished concrete, rough wooden pillars, snazzy curving white chairs, and a wide open kitchen. You can watch Martin Caws, formerly with Marco Pierre White and Tom Aikens, hard at work there creating his modern eclectic menu. Some dishes are made for sharing between two - a romantic touch. Village East starters include deep-fried soft shell crabs with watermelon and wasabi sauce, main include Chateaubriand (for 2) with green beans, chateau potatoes and béarnaise, and desserts include an outrageous chocolate pot. Great bars. Chilled vibe.

Lunch in Village East on a very busy pre-Christmas Wednesday excellent even with a number of large parties in the restaurant.

Went for a lunch meeting, had to wait in bar area for 10/15mins while they prepared a table as they'd got the number of diners wrong, but wasn't a problem for us. Went onto be seated in back dining room which had a great ambience, very Christmasy -mini poinsetas are a nice touch. Cod extremely well cooked with crunky skin, spinachy mash excpetionally good if very salty, free bread and oil of a really high quality. My fellow diners rated their steak and gourmet chicken sandwich equally highly. 5*

At Village East, small portions but good food. Service is inconsistent.

We've been there several times now and we were never disapointed. Food is really good. I had crispy skin sea bass with artichokes and new potatoes and friends shared a Chateaubriand. Everything was delivious. For dessert we had a creamy bread and butter pudding and a chocolate fondant.

I found Village East on the Top Table website and I am pleased to say we were not disappointed. The atmosphere was lively and the service and the food were fantastic. My girlfriend and I both had the scallop and pork belly starter which sounded like a strange combination but worked superbly. For main course I had the duck breast which was cooked to perfection. If there was any negative would be the cheesecake. On reflection I wish I'd chosen the chocolate fondant. Next time!!

Great local place to meet friends.

Village East. Exceptional service from the moment we walked through the door. Check out the very inventive cocktail list - including the 'Vesper' from the Casino Royale film!! Food was good portions and perfectly cooked - the rack of lamb on the specials was particularly tender. Even though there is a stated 2 hour turnaround for the table, we weren't hurried and there's always the lounge bar to retire to after dinner. Highly recommended!

Village East is a lovely space, with great lighting and quirky design. However, the food can be a bit hit or miss. It's not that anything is actually bad, but some dishes are very good (like the squid + chorizo salad) and some are just mediocre (the venison). The wine list has very few reasonably priced options, and gets quite expensive once you go past the first or second bottle of wine.
